Remember that guy a while back who "imported the first legal GTR" but did it well before the manufacture date? He's lucky, this is what can potentially happen.
The import law is rather outrageous. This fine and jail time for this person exists to "protect" car dealerships, just another sign of government bribery/corruption. However so long as it exists please follow it by the letter so you don't end up like this guy.
edit: The article was obviously written by non car people as a few people pointed out.
I just want to add that I think we need to spread the word on this. This law needs to end like with marijuana legalization. This isn't even a drug, it's a car. It's a victimless crime.

I can kind of understand crushing the car and a small fine but jail time is insane. It's a victimless crime.
Also that article was pretty hard to read...

This article is kind of appalling...appallingly written.
"It has a unique aerodynamic frame, chrome detailing, and turbo-charged engine. In other words, it's very fast."
...what?

Well it's obvious any article about cars on a non car site is going to be dumb.

It is, this is the perfect example. This shouldn't even be illegal IMO.

Well no wonder people pay full sticker at dealerships if this can pass for car writing.

I increased my top speed by like 7 mph when I detailed my chrome.

There was a formula 1 article on CNN a while back that tried to describe turbo chargers that was equal to this. All the media is like this generally when discussing cars. Makes me LOL when people read Forbes car articles.

Not even that.. the fact that A) some resources are wasted busting these cars instead of solving serious crimes and B) the fact that this penalty is higher than some way more serious crimes makes me crazy.
This isn't just from a car person POV either

Believe it or not, the Forbes F1 coverage isn't terrible.

I think most people would agree with you for sure. Too bad not as many people care about importing cars as legalized marijuana. Hopefully this incident becomes known so people want to fight the law. That's why I want to spread the word about this.

The schmucks who mugged me a few years ago got less punishment than people who bring illigal Silvias and Minis in.

It's ridiculous. I'm hoping word spreads on this so people want to end this law like with marijuana legalization

This isn't even a drug, it's a car. It's a victimless crime.
....hahahaha thanks for pointed that out. At first, I read the article headline as: "Person thought he got away with importing Salvia..."
And now I chose to read it this way cos its fun :D
The linked article, on the other hand, should be a crime.

Isn't it ridiculous? Like I would expect such a fine and potential imprisonment for importing cocaine or something.

Its messed up man. I think this is a good example of moneyed people making irrationally unjust laws to protect their business interests.

That's literally where this law came from, here's the wikipedia entry:
The grey market was successful enough that it ate significantly into the business of Mercedes-Benz of North America and their dealers. The corporation launched a successful million-dollar congressional lobbying effort to stop private importation of vehicles not officially intended for the U.S. market.[17] An organisation called AICA (Automotive Importers Compliance Association) was formed by importers in California, Florida, New York, Texas, and elsewhere to counter some of these actions by Mercedes lobbyists, but the Motor Vehicle Safety Compliance Act was passed in 1988, effectively ending private import of grey-market vehicles to the United States.
"The corporation launched a successful million-dollar congressional bribery effort"
Fixed that for them.

Yeah that's a terrible article.
From what I've read the charges were not really for the actual importing, but for the wire-fraud and conspiracy surrounding the registration and sales.
He got caught with emails stating that he knew it was illegal and that he was willing to pay a third party to defraud the state while registering it. Then he was caught with the car and the feds told him to hold onto it while they figured out what they were going to do... and instead of doing that he sold it to some other dude committing fraud once again.

We should get a popular car guy like Doug Demuro to make or support a movement for banning this law. Its so stupid.

Really any importing of a car like this is going to be fraud.

There have been attempts at petitions in the past, if we got a bunch of people like that to announce a .gov website petition that would be great.

That's true, but the guy here really only got hammered after the feds caught him and told him to do nothing with the car after which he went and sold it anyway. Of course they're going to throw the book at you if you thumb your nose at them and you've been dumb enough to leave a paper trail all the way back to the beginning.
I'm betting if he'd just taken his lumps the first time he was caught he'd just be down a car and maybe a fine, but he decided to go all in and law enforcement said 'right back at ya'.
